Who we are
The Cholmondeley Children's Foundation was established in 2005, the 80th anniversary of Cholmondeley Children's Home, to widen and deepen the involvement of community-minded individuals and organisations who wish to improve the lives of Canterbury children in need. The aim of the Foundation is to secure the future of Cholmondeley Home and its work with children and families in Canterbury by strengthening the financial foundation of the Home through the creation of a capital fund.
Cholmondeley Memorial Children's Home was built and gifted to the children of Canterbury in 1925 by Hugh Heber Cholmondeley to ensure that children would always have a safe refuge to go to in times of family crisis. Located at Governors Bay near Christchurch the Home is a short-term haven for children who cannot remain in their own homes. This maybe due to sickness, death of a parent, drug abuse, financial hardship or as a result of abuse or neglect. The children range in age from 3 to 12 years. The home provides comfort, protection, schooling, counselling and support for up to 28 children each day. It also provides respite care to support parents under stress and works with families to improve their parenting skills while their child is at Cholmondeley.
Last year approximately 1000 children spent time at Cholmondeley. The Homes running costs exceed $1.4 million, only about one third of which is recovered from Government agencies and parent contributions. The significant shortfall of $875,000 each year has to be met by fundraising and relies heavily upon the generosity and support of the wider Canterbury community.
The Home and its outreach child and family care services are funded by a unique partnership between a private charitable organisation, the Canterbury community and state social welfare and education agencies.
After a visit, retired Principal Court Youth Judge, Michael J A Brown described the home thus: "This is a beautiful haven. It is how I always envisaged caring for children in need. Cholmondeley is a true partnership with the community. Canterbury is indeed lucky."
